| MHCO and OSESA joined forces at Can Am in March 2012 |

| Submitted by Lori Rafter, MHCO & OSESA member
The Miniature Horse was well represented at this year's Can-Am Equine Emporium on March 16, 17, & 18. OSESA and MHCO shared a booth arranged for them by Mike and Kathy Straw of Strawbridge Miniatures.
Lori Rafter and Mack DeGelder of MiLo Acres Training Centre manned the booth for the weekend with help from several other members of the two clubs. Thanks go to Jeanette Wagner, Penny Geddes, Desiree Wallace, John McCallum, Rita Noble, Terri Schell, Sheila Klerks, Margaret McConnell and anyone else whose name I have missed that helped us out.
Mike and Kathy had two silent auctions of two colts from their farm running over the course of the show to raise money for cancer. A total of $825 was raised and donated to the Cancer Society! OSESA displayed their essay contest giveaway horse in one of the beautiful custom Mini stalls provided by Wm Langille Welding of Brantford. There were breed promos run twice per day in a small ring in the center of the marketplace. An announcer described each breed's characteristics while the horses were paraded individually in the ring. Maple Mountain Just Desserts A size colt owned by Lori Rafter, the OSESA essay contest B colt Noblebrooks Radiantly Red donated by Rita Noble of Noblebrook Farm and JEM Break N Pattern owned by KIm Barnsdale of Wee Three Minis all took turns being led by various club members.
The Miniatures also took part in the Horse Power show in the big main ring. Lori drove JEM Break N Pattern (Fleur) in the barrel and pole bending races against a pair of Friesian horses. Fleur was the star of the show most often winning the races! She earned our breed a lot of respect and the booth was packed with people wanting to see "the amazing little horse!" It was a great weekend and very productive for both clubs raising plenty of interest in the Minis with several new members signing on with their club of choice if not both!

| MHCO Website soon to have a new look! |

| Dear MHCO Member,
Within the next few days the MHCO.CA website will be undergoing an update. Some features that you are currently used to being in one location will no longer be in that location. During this update, the MHCO.CA site may not be available for an extended period of time - anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours.
Highlights of the changes:
- The menu is no longer on the left hand side of the site, the menu has been moved to the top of the site.
- you now log in on the top of the website (right below the menu), your email address is *still* your username, the password you had set will *still* work.
- When you were logged in, you used to be able to post a classified right from the menu, this has been changed, you now have to click on Manage classifieds, from there you can post a new classified, as well as manage your current ads.
- In many other locations (calendar, news, photo gallery, etc.) you now have to go within the page to add/update entries
- The website has been set to a fixed size - this size is a good cross section sample of all the folks who visit our site, we have done this to ensure that all information is displayed to everyone at the same consistency.
As with any update, or change, there may be problems, if you *do* happen to encounter one of these problems, please send mhco@mhco.ca all the information you can provide, what you were doing (if you were posting an ad, all the details would be nice - including the name of the photo you might have been uploading & a copy of the photo). If any issues are reported, and we need to resolve them, the site may become unavailable for a short period of time, usually no more than 30 minutes.
This update allows me to better update the site in the future, many features of the website that I setup 3 years ago for MHCO could not move forward without a revamp of the site. I appreciate the support of you, the members, and will continue to work towards the expansion of the MHCO.CA brand.
If you have any questions, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me via email.
Rob Green
Director

| Who do you think should win? |

| It’s time to start looking and listening for potential candidates for the MHCO Members’ Choice Perpetual Awards: Sportsmanship, Fellowship and Horsemanship. Please start watching at Socials, Shows, and Meetings … any event where MHCO members are together.
These are members whom you observe going out of their way to do those little “extras” for the club and their fellow members. They are members who enhance the MHCO by their actions and attitudes which set examples for other MHCO members. They are members who you would like to see recognized for their efforts in the club.
For examples of past awards presented, please go to the MHCO website www.mcho.ca under the YEAR END AWARDS link.
Any member can submit their vote for another member, but not for oneself. An explanation is optional but not necessary as to why you feel this person deserves the award. Please send your nomination and for which award you want considered to the MHCO Awards Committee - Mary McKibbon c/o mary@bigvalley-farms.com by SEPTEMBER 15 of this year.
All awards will be presented at the annual MHCO Awards banquet (November).
Here are the criteria for each award:
SPORTSMANSHIP: (donated by Carolyn Aarup): To enjoy Miniature horses, to promote understanding, knowledge and proper care of horses to fellow MHCO members and/or exhibitors. Skill in/fondness for the MHCO, a person who can take loss or defeat without complaint, or victory without gloating and who treats his fellow exhibitors with fairness, generosity and courtesy, is respectful of rules and decisions of officials, gives maximum effort.
FELLOWSHIP: (donated by Debbie Scriven): To promote and enjoy good fellowship among horse lovers. Companionship, friendly association with others, mutual sharing as of experience and activity, a group of people with the same interest, to work towards a common goal.
HORSEMANSHIP: (donated by Dennis & Angela Merner): To promote an interest in horses and horsemanship, to have a particular skill in, or the art of managing, training or taking care of horses.
Nominations received for the following award will be sent by the MHCO’s OEF Representative to the OEF office by September 15 of this year.
OEF “People’s Choice Award”: (this nomination will be sent to the OEF and award will be presented at the Annual OEF Convention in November): A deserving individual within our discipline and association who has made an outstanding contribution of time and effort overall on behalf of their OEF affiliated club (which the MHCO is). This nominee is recognized for the behind-the-scenes effort of this equine enthusiast of the MHCO. Nominations received will be sent by the MHCO’s OEF Representative to the OEF office by September 15 of this year.

| Travel Alert Update on EHV-1 Outbreak |
Travel Alert Update on EHV-1 Outbreak

| Neurotropic Equine Herpes Virus-1 Status Update
Equine Canada's Health and Welfare Committee is notifying horse owners that Neurotropic Equine Herpes Virus-1 (nEHV-1) has been reported in horses in the United States, with confirmed cases in Alberta (1) and suspected cases British Columbia (3). This is the neurological strain of Equine Herpes Virus 1 (EHV 1). Outbreaks of nEHV-1 are contagious and have a high risk of mortality.
It is believed the initial cases were in horses attending a cutting horse show in Ogden, Utah, held April 29 to May 8, 2011, and that horses exposed to the virus at this competition have played a role in reported cases elsewhere.
The horse in Alberta did not attend the cutting horse competition. The horses in British Columbia, which all reside on the same farm, did. Quarantine and biosecurity procedures have been established and no secondary cases have been reported at this time, on this farm.
Please note that the nEHV-1 cases reported in British Columbia have not been confirmed by laboratory testing, but through clinical diagnosis. The three British Columbia horses that returned from the Odgen show developed neurological disease and are being treated intensively as if they had nEHV-1. Strict biosecurity procedures have been put in place to prevent spread of this disease from this farm.
Update from Alberta
There is one confirmed nEHV-1 case which showed neurologic signs on May 1, 2011 and was isolated at that time. This horse did not attend the Utah show but was in direct contact with the horses attending the above stated show before they left Canada. This horse has been under veterinary care and is recovering very well and is in no danger. The origin of the source of contact for this horse remains unknown.
As of May 18, 2011 there is one yearling confirmed positive for EHV-1 which showed only respiratory signs of the disease similar to normal influenza infections. This horse was in direct contact with tack from the horses returning from Utah. This horse is under treatment and isolation and is in no danger as this time.
·As of May 18, 2011 there is an additional confirmed positive case of a horse returning from Utah which showed a mild transitory respiratory disease. This horse is under isolation and treatment and is in no danger.
· There are six-eight tests pending on horses similar to the above horse, which have attended the Utah show and have experienced mild respiratory disease. We expect some of these horses to have a positive test and have taken this into account on our comments below.
Therefore, at this time, there have been no horses affected in the province of Alberta or British Columbia that were not either at the Utah show or in direct contact with these horses, either before or after their return. The incubation period for this disease can be as long as 21 days but normally symptoms show within the first 10-14 days. Presently, we are within the 10-14 day timeframe.
Measures that have been taken
· Competitions involving the horses directly affected by the Utah Show have been cancelled by the Cutting Horse Association until further notice.
· All of the participants attending the Utah show have been notified and asked to isolate their horses.
· The Chief Provincial Veterinarian is gathering all information, monitoring the disease and is looking into the epidemiology of EHV-1 in Alberta at this time.
Ongoing recommendations
· All horse owners have been asked to carry out normal biosecurity protocols which can be found on many websites, including that of the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association.
· Any horse owner who has potentially been in contact with this group of horses should monitor the temperature of their horses twice daily for 14 -21 days post exposure and discuss any abnormalities with their veterinarian.
· The protection afforded by vaccination is debatable and we recommend that horse owners discuss it with their veterinarian, as every horse is unique and requires a different vaccination protocol.
The following is a statement from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)
Equine Herpes Virus (EHV) is a disease present in Canada and is not a federally controlled disease. Subsequently, in accordance with international guidelines, CFIA has no authority for requesting certification related to this disease from the United States Department of Agriculture when importing horses from the United States (US). Import conditions for all horses entering Canada from the US will not be changed in relation to the recent reports of EHV cases in the US.
However, as always, imported horses need to comply with all current Canadian import conditions. In addition, arrival of unwell horses at the border can affect the import process.
