Driving clinician Nelson Snider gives tips on harnessing a Miniature

Clinician marina Latto demonstrates Natural Horsemanship tehcniques

Pam Christopher of Ozark Canada Tack had her fully stocked booth at the clinic

On Saturday May 5, 2012 just over thirty MHCO members attended the annual MHCO Spring Clinic held at the farm of MHCO members Jim and Gene Baynham (Nixon Hills) in Seaforth Ontario. This year's clinic offered members sessions on Driving and Natural Horsemanship.

Inside the arena, the Driving segment was taught by clinician Nelson Snider, Pleasure and CDE driver and judge) who gave a morning session to Beginner drivers and afternoon session for Advanced drivers.

Outside in the round pen, members were taught Natural Horsemanship techniques by Marina Latto, Certified Horse Trainer and Coach.

Pam Christopher of Ozark Canada Tack had her booth there stocked with just about anything one could think of for Miniatures. The food booth was run by friends and family of the Baynhams - all food was donated by them.

Thank you to all MHCO members who came out and made the day a success. A very special thank you to the Baynhams for their generous donation of their property use (including supplying outdoor washroom facilities) and food for the food booth (which included delicious home made pulled pork).

Proposed MHCO Honour Roll (HR) Point System
MHCO honours award Main concept:
> pts would be on horse only not persons
> different levels for achievement - Bronze, Silver & Gold)
> base it on a 2 yr period to make it fair so exhibitors could achieve pts in a reasonable amt of time

> Pros
> more people to come put to shows
> Work toward it even if a bad year

> Cons
> Labour involved to enter points Into website.

Ideas for awards: plaques with different colours (Bronze, Silver, Gold) like HOF plaques to hang on wall
Coolers with MHCO logo & "MHCO Bronze Honour Roll" on it, Bronze, Silver, Gold halter with stitching
on it saying "MHCO Bronze Honour Roll" on it, barn halter with Honours level on it, name on it

Points per show (from MHCO regular Club show point system used by Club Show Secretary)
1st = 6 pts
2nd = 5 pts
3rd = 4 pts
4th = 3 pts
5th = 2 pts
6th = 1 pt
Reserve Champion = 1 pt
Grand Champion = 2 pts
Supreme = 3 pts

Proposed MHCO Honour Roll (HR) Point System continued

Halter Horse = All conformation classes (NO Colour classes or Showmanship classes like MHCO rules)
Halter Horse calculation (based on each 1 class horse would go in):
1st place at all 3 Core shows per year per 1 class = 6 pts x 3 shows x 1 class = 18 pts per year
6th place at all 3 shows per year per 1 class = 1 pt x 3 shows x 1 class = 3 pts per year
Average pts (18 first place points + 3 sixths place points = 21 divided by 2) = 10.50 pts per year on average a horse could achieve
Based on a 2 yr period = 10.50 pts x 2 years = 22 pts needed to achieve Bronze Level Honour Roll, double points for Silver, triple points for Gold

Performance horse = Halter Obstacle, Hunter, Jumper (no Showmanship like MHCO rules)
Performance Horse calculation (based on each 1 class horse would go in):
1st place at all 3 Core shows per year per 1 class = 6 pts x 3 shows x 1 class = 18 pts per year
6th place at all 3 shows per year per 1 class = 1 pt x 3 shows x 1 class = 3 pts per year
Average pts (18 first place points + 3 sixths place points = 21 divided by 2) = 10.50 pts per year on average a horse could achieve
Based on a 2 yr period = 10.50 pts x 2 years = 22 pts needed to achieve Bronze Level Honour Roll, double points for Silver, triple points for Gold *

* Halter or Performance Horse HR Levels that can be achieved:
Bronze Level Honour Roll = 22 pts needed to be earned - perhaps award a Halter with writing on noseband
Silver Level Honour Roll = 44 pts needed to be earned - perhaps award a wall trophy plaque
Gold Level Honour Roll = 88 pts needed to be earned - perhaps award a Cooler or blanket

Driving Horse (Working & Reinsmanship but excluding Obstacle Driving)
Driving Horse calculation (based on 2 Driving classes horse could go in excluding Driving Obstacle):
1st place at all 3 shows per year per 2 classes = 6pts x 3 shows x 2 classes = 36 pts per year
6th place at all 4 shows per year per 2 classes = 1 pt x 3 shows x 2 classes = 6 pts per year
Average pts (36 first place points + 6 sixth place points = 42 divided by 2 = 21 pts per year on average a horse could achieve
Based on a 2 yr period = 21 pts x 2 years = 42 pts needed to achieve Bronze Level Honour Roll, double points for Silver, triple points for Gold **

** Driving Horse HR Levels that can be achieved:
Bronze Level Honour Roll = 42 pts needed to be earned - perhaps award a Halter with writing on noseband
Silver Level Honour Roll = 84 pts needed to be earned - perhaps award a wall trophy plaque
Gold Level Honour Roll = 126 pts needed to be earned - perhaps award a Cooler or blanket

MHCO and OSESA joined forces at Can Am in March 2012

Submitted by Lori Rafter, MHCO & OSESA member

The Miniature Horse was well represented at this year's Can-Am Equine Emporium on March 16, 17, & 18. OSESA and MHCO shared a booth arranged for them by Mike and Kathy Straw of Strawbridge Miniatures.

Lori Rafter and Mack DeGelder of MiLo Acres Training Centre manned the booth for the weekend with help from several other members of the two clubs. Thanks go to Jeanette Wagner, Penny Geddes, Desiree Wallace, John McCallum, Rita Noble, Terri Schell, Sheila Klerks, Margaret McConnell and anyone else whose name I have missed that helped us out.

Mike and Kathy had two silent auctions of two colts from their farm running over the course of the show to raise money for cancer. A total of $825 was raised and donated to the Cancer Society! OSESA displayed their essay contest giveaway horse in one of the beautiful custom Mini stalls provided by Wm Langille Welding of Brantford. There were breed promos run twice per day in a small ring in the center of the marketplace. An announcer described each breed's characteristics while the horses were paraded individually in the ring. Maple Mountain Just Desserts A size colt owned by Lori Rafter, the OSESA essay contest B colt Noblebrooks Radiantly Red donated by Rita Noble of Noblebrook Farm and JEM Break N Pattern owned by KIm Barnsdale of Wee Three Minis all took turns being led by various club members.

The Miniatures also took part in the Horse Power show in the big main ring. Lori drove JEM Break N Pattern (Fleur) in the barrel and pole bending races against a pair of Friesian horses. Fleur was the star of the show most often winning the races! She earned our breed a lot of respect and the booth was packed with people wanting to see "the amazing little horse!" It was a great weekend and very productive for both clubs raising plenty of interest in the Minis with several new members signing on with their club of choice if not both!

MHCO Mid-Winter Social - poor weather didn't hold us back!
Members enjoy an informative presentation by Equine Choice Probiotics

Youth Plus Club member doing crafts

Silent Auction items toko up 4 tables!

Despite wintery weather which held off some members from attending, the annual MHCO Mid-Winter Social on Feb 12, 2012 was a great time had by all. Over 40 members attended including a few new members who signed up that day.

The day started off with an excellent presentation by Doug Campbell from Equine Choice Probiotics who spoke on the Horse health and how Probiotics can enhance or help your horse. There was a good question period during and after Mr. Campbell's presentation which resulted in a lot of positive feedback from members. Thank you to Linda Reinders for inviting Equine Choice Probiotics.

During the Social, a separate area allowed the MHCO Youth Plus Club to enjoy themselves visiting and doing a Horse related craft. There were 9 Youths in attendance.

The potluck lunch was fabulous; members brought many different dishes including 2 choices of chili, meatballs, lazymans cabbage rolls, salads and desserts - the apple chips were a big success so whomever brought those, feel free to do so again!

Pam Christopher from Ozark Canada had a tack booth there which gave members an opportunity to stock up on supplies for the upcoming show season. Unfortunately Angela from Little Horse Shoe Acres couldn't make it due to the poor weather in her area (she will be at the Spring General Meeting in April).

The Silent auction had a large number of assorted horse and non-horse items donated by members including $75 worth of Probiotics donated by Equine Choice. The auction raised $273.50 - one of the best silent auctions had so far! Thank you to all the members who donated items for the auction.

Thank you to Yvonne Mangan and Linda Reinders for organizing the Social and for Raquel Dowsling for taking attendance and collecting memberships as needed. Thank you also to those members who helped set up the potluck lunch buffet table and cleaning up the hall and kitchen afterwards.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the April General meeting!

MHCO Website soon to have a new look!

Dear MHCO Member,

Within the next few days the MHCO.CA website will be undergoing an update. Some features that you are currently used to being in one location will no longer be in that location. During this update, the MHCO.CA site may not be available for an extended period of time - anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Highlights of the changes:

- The menu is no longer on the left hand side of the site, the menu has been moved to the top of the site.

- you now log in on the top of the website (right below the menu), your email address is *still* your username, the password you had set will *still* work.

- When you were logged in, you used to be able to post a classified right from the menu, this has been changed, you now have to click on Manage classifieds, from there you can post a new classified, as well as manage your current ads.

- In many other locations (calendar, news, photo gallery, etc.) you now have to go within the page to add/update entries

- The website has been set to a fixed size - this size is a good cross section sample of all the folks who visit our site, we have done this to ensure that all information is displayed to everyone at the same consistency.

As with any update, or change, there may be problems, if you *do* happen to encounter one of these problems, please send mhco@mhco.ca all the information you can provide, what you were doing (if you were posting an ad, all the details would be nice - including the name of the photo you might have been uploading & a copy of the photo). If any issues are reported, and we need to resolve them, the site may become unavailable for a short period of time, usually no more than 30 minutes.

This update allows me to better update the site in the future, many features of the website that I setup 3 years ago for MHCO could not move forward without a revamp of the site. I appreciate the support of you, the members, and will continue to work towards the expansion of the MHCO.CA brand.

If you have any questions, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me via email.

Despite the scorching temperatures, the second MHCO show of the season held at Beamsville Fairgrounds was a hot success!

With 220 entries in total and 64 horses, the Beamsville show once again proved to be our best attended show of the year. Beamsville was brought back as a 5th show to the MHCO show series this year due to a number of members from that area voicing their support for the show. A special thank you to Tiffany Beverly who was a great promoter of this show as she put up our Youth posters around the area as well as posted it on the internet.

MHCO Youth Plus Poster Contest winner Amy Trumpler's poster was used to promote this show.

Thank you to Doug Savage for being our "announcing system" (good thing he has a booming voice) and to Anne Savage for keeping our show entries in order as MHCO Show Secretary. Ribbon helpers were two wonderful little girls named Megan and Gabby and they did a great job, distributing ribbons to the class winners with big smiles. And speaking of ribbons, this MHCO show was the debut for showing off our new MHCO coloured ribbons; lots of positive feedback was heard. Thank you to Tracy Sammons for choosing and ordering these new ribbons. Thank you to everyone who pitched in and helped with the ring set up and at ring side to help send exhibitors into the ring.

Tickets were made available to be purchased on our Patio Table Draw - thank you to Kim Lymburner and Anne Savage for helping to sell tickets during the lunch break at the show. These tickets will be available for purchase at future MHCO events. For more information, contact mhco@mhco.ca

Who do you think should win?

It’s time to start looking and listening for potential candidates for the MHCO Members’ Choice Perpetual Awards: Sportsmanship, Fellowship and Horsemanship. Please start watching at Socials, Shows, and Meetings … any event where MHCO members are together.

These are members whom you observe going out of their way to do those little “extras” for the club and their fellow members. They are members who enhance the MHCO by their actions and attitudes which set examples for other MHCO members. They are members who you would like to see recognized for their efforts in the club.

For examples of past awards presented, please go to the MHCO website www.mcho.ca under the YEAR END AWARDS link.

Any member can submit their vote for another member, but not for oneself. An explanation is optional but not necessary as to why you feel this person deserves the award. Please send your nomination and for which award you want considered to the MHCO Awards Committee - Mary McKibbon c/o mary@bigvalley-farms.com by SEPTEMBER 15 of this year.

All awards will be presented at the annual MHCO Awards banquet (November).

Here are the criteria for each award:

SPORTSMANSHIP: (donated by Carolyn Aarup): To enjoy Miniature horses, to promote understanding, knowledge and proper care of horses to fellow MHCO members and/or exhibitors. Skill in/fondness for the MHCO, a person who can take loss or defeat without complaint, or victory without gloating and who treats his fellow exhibitors with fairness, generosity and courtesy, is respectful of rules and decisions of officials, gives maximum effort.

FELLOWSHIP: (donated by Debbie Scriven): To promote and enjoy good fellowship among horse lovers. Companionship, friendly association with others, mutual sharing as of experience and activity, a group of people with the same interest, to work towards a common goal.

HORSEMANSHIP: (donated by Dennis & Angela Merner): To promote an interest in horses and horsemanship, to have a particular skill in, or the art of managing, training or taking care of horses.

Nominations received for the following award will be sent by the MHCO’s OEF Representative to the OEF office by September 15 of this year.

OEF “People’s Choice Award”: (this nomination will be sent to the OEF and award will be presented at the Annual OEF Convention in November): A deserving individual within our discipline and association who has made an outstanding contribution of time and effort overall on behalf of their OEF affiliated club (which the MHCO is). This nominee is recognized for the behind-the-scenes effort of this equine enthusiast of the MHCO. Nominations received will be sent by the MHCO’s OEF Representative to the OEF office by September 15 of this year.

Beaver Scout visit to Big Valley Farms
Beaver Scout leading miniature horse

Meeting a miniature foal

On April 26th, 2011, the 1st Mono Mills Beaver Scouts had a tour of Big Valley Farms owned by Mary McKibbon.

24 people attended which included Beavers, along with some members of their families, plus 3 Beaver Leaders.

The tour took approximately 1 hour which consisted of the barn as well as the paddocks. Some of the activities we did were viewing an obstacle course, the children leading a horse, and petting a month old foal.

There was also a question and answer period.

Travel Alert Update on EHV-1 Outbreak
Travel Alert Update on EHV-1 Outbreak

Neurotropic Equine Herpes Virus-1 Status Update

Equine Canada's Health and Welfare Committee is notifying horse owners that Neurotropic Equine Herpes Virus-1 (nEHV-1) has been reported in horses in the United States, with confirmed cases in Alberta (1) and suspected cases British Columbia (3). This is the neurological strain of Equine Herpes Virus 1 (EHV 1). Outbreaks of nEHV-1 are contagious and have a high risk of mortality.

It is believed the initial cases were in horses attending a cutting horse show in Ogden, Utah, held April 29 to May 8, 2011, and that horses exposed to the virus at this competition have played a role in reported cases elsewhere.

The horse in Alberta did not attend the cutting horse competition. The horses in British Columbia, which all reside on the same farm, did. Quarantine and biosecurity procedures have been established and no secondary cases have been reported at this time, on this farm.

Please note that the nEHV-1 cases reported in British Columbia have not been confirmed by laboratory testing, but through clinical diagnosis. The three British Columbia horses that returned from the Odgen show developed neurological disease and are being treated intensively as if they had nEHV-1. Strict biosecurity procedures have been put in place to prevent spread of this disease from this farm.

Update from Alberta

There is one confirmed nEHV-1 case which showed neurologic signs on May 1, 2011 and was isolated at that time. This horse did not attend the Utah show but was in direct contact with the horses attending the above stated show before they left Canada. This horse has been under veterinary care and is recovering very well and is in no danger. The origin of the source of contact for this horse remains unknown.

As of May 18, 2011 there is one yearling confirmed positive for EHV-1 which showed only respiratory signs of the disease similar to normal influenza infections. This horse was in direct contact with tack from the horses returning from Utah. This horse is under treatment and isolation and is in no danger as this time.

·As of May 18, 2011 there is an additional confirmed positive case of a horse returning from Utah which showed a mild transitory respiratory disease. This horse is under isolation and treatment and is in no danger.

· There are six-eight tests pending on horses similar to the above horse, which have attended the Utah show and have experienced mild respiratory disease. We expect some of these horses to have a positive test and have taken this into account on our comments below.

Therefore, at this time, there have been no horses affected in the province of Alberta or British Columbia that were not either at the Utah show or in direct contact with these horses, either before or after their return. The incubation period for this disease can be as long as 21 days but normally symptoms show within the first 10-14 days. Presently, we are within the 10-14 day timeframe.

Measures that have been taken

· Competitions involving the horses directly affected by the Utah Show have been cancelled by the Cutting Horse Association until further notice.

· All of the participants attending the Utah show have been notified and asked to isolate their horses.

· The Chief Provincial Veterinarian is gathering all information, monitoring the disease and is looking into the epidemiology of EHV-1 in Alberta at this time.

Ongoing recommendations

· All horse owners have been asked to carry out normal biosecurity protocols which can be found on many websites, including that of the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association.

· Any horse owner who has potentially been in contact with this group of horses should monitor the temperature of their horses twice daily for 14 -21 days post exposure and discuss any abnormalities with their veterinarian.

· The protection afforded by vaccination is debatable and we recommend that horse owners discuss it with their veterinarian, as every horse is unique and requires a different vaccination protocol.

The following is a statement from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)

Equine Herpes Virus (EHV) is a disease present in Canada and is not a federally controlled disease. Subsequently, in accordance with international guidelines, CFIA has no authority for requesting certification related to this disease from the United States Department of Agriculture when importing horses from the United States (US). Import conditions for all horses entering Canada from the US will not be changed in relation to the recent reports of EHV cases in the US.

However, as always, imported horses need to comply with all current Canadian import conditions. In addition, arrival of unwell horses at the border can affect the import process.

TRAVEL ALERT!!!

This following link was received from California Food and Department of Agriculture

http://www.cdfa.ca.gov/ahfss/animal_health/equine_herpes_virus.html

In Calgary they have closed the doors for 21 days on some of their horses shows.

I am posting this for those who are planning to purchase horses, or show in the near future as a precaution. Horses travel extensively in the USA to shows and it would be very easy for this disease to get from the west coast to the east coast.

Please monitor your horses for any symptoms.

If any new info becomes available to me as to change of requirements on horses travelling to and from the USA, I will post it on this News page.
